PU vs Acrylic Waterproofing: Which System is Right for Your Roof?

The two families of liquid membranes

Liquid-applied waterproofing comes in two main families. Acrylic membranes are water-based, UV-stable and economical, with an elongation of roughly 150-300%. PU (polyurethane) membranes are solvent-based, incredibly tough and stretch up to 400% before tearing.

For Jaipur's 40°C+ summer surfaces and sharp monsoon cooling, elongation matters: the membrane must stretch as the concrete slab expands and contracts without tearing at the edges.

When acrylic is the smart choice

Acrylic systems shine on reasonably stable slabs, where the main threat is UV and ponding rather than movement. They are easier to touch up, cheaper per square foot, and many brands carry 5-year performance warranties.

For budgets of ₹45/sq.ft, a quality 3-coat acrylic with fiber mesh at corners is an honest, durable solution for most residential terraces.

When to step up to polyurethane

Choose PU when your slab has visible cracks, when you want a decade of protection, or when the terrace carries heavy foot traffic. The 5-layer Ultimate PU System we install costs ₹75/sq.ft and includes fiber reinforcement, a reflective topcoat and a 48-hour pond test.

The golden rule: if your roof moves, choose PU. If your roof is stable and your budget is tight, quality acrylic still delivers years of dry interiors.
